UT Formula i s a solid extract containing a combination of herbal extracts, essential oils and neutraceuticals that have both antimicrobial and soothing properties for infections of the urinary tract. It contains a synergistic blend of antiseptic, diuretic, demulcent, and tonifying ingredients for the entire urinary system.

Indications: Cystitis, urethritis, prostatitis and nephritis

Ingredient Properties: The Uva Ursi solid extract used in this formula is 10 times more concentrated than a herbal tincture. A roto vaporizer is used to create the solid extract by gently evaporating a liquid extract of the uva ursi. UT formula also contains a fluid extract of Echinacea, Marshmallow root, and the essential oils of Buchu, Cardamom, Fennel, and Orange .

The leaves of Buchu (Barosma betulina) contain the volatile oils monoterpene and disophenol, which are urinary antiseptics and flavonoids. UT Formula contains a highly concentrated buchu essential oil. 1000 pounds of leaves are required to produce a single pound of this essential oil.

Bearberry (Uva Ursi) and Pipsissewa (Chimaphelia umbellata) both have astringent properties that benefit the kidneys, digestive system, bladder, liver, and urinary tract. The leaves of both plants are rich in tannins and used to treat bladder infections, kidney infections, and to alleviate chronic cystitis. Uva ursi contains the glycoside arbutin which is converted into hydroquinone within the urinary tract. Hyrdoquinone is one of the most powerful known natural urinary antiseptics.

Mannose is believed to be the active constituent responsible for cranberry's urinary antiseptic properties. The most common bacteria involved in urinary tract infections is E. coli, which is not able to attach to the mucosal lining of the bladder when the compound mannose is present. After ingestion of mannose, E. coli rapidly detaches from the bladder wall and attaches to the mannose and then is excreted in the urine.

Mannose is naturally produced in the body, has no caloric value, and is tolerated well by patients suffering from candidiasis and blood sugar disorders. Because Mannose is absorbed in the upper intestine, it has no effect on the friendly E. coli in the lower intestine.

The demulcents Marshmallow root and Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice have been added to UT formula to prevent irritation to the stomach lining, and to sooth the mucous membranes of the urinary tract.

Dosage: 1/8 to 1/2 teaspoon five times per day for 10 days in acute cases, 1/8 tsp. 1/2 teapsoon BID for prevention of urinary infection.

What to expect: UT formula on its own is usually enough to manage acute UTI's, but chronic infections call for a comprehensive program to address underlying causes. Drinking 10 glasses of water a day, and avoiding sugar and caffeine is also helpful.

Complicating factors that need to be addressed in chronic urinary infections include: candidiasis, functional urinary problems such as strictures, and interstitial cystitis.

Side effects: At high doses or with long-term use, some patients may experience stomach irritation, which may be ameliorated by taking UT Formula with food.
